Miles also offered a word of caution to overcareful musicians who tried out for him: “Don’t play the notes. Play the music.” One source of Miles’ power as a musician and a bandleader was his ability to listen scrupulously to himself and to his band members as they played. If all he heard was notes, something was wrong. That’s a useful reminder for writers, too. You don’t actually know what you’ve “said” as a writer until, once the words are on paper, you take time to listen to them.
