The night is beautiful,

So the faces of my people.

The stars are beautiful,

So the eyes of my people.

Beautiful, also, is the sun.

Beautiful, also, are the souls of my people.

War Department General Order 143: Ordering the Creation of the U.S. Colored Troops, May 22, 1863

The outbreak of the Civil War set off a rush by free black men to enlist in U.S. military units. They were turned away, however, because a Federal law dating from 1792 barred Negroes from bearing arms for the U.S. Army. The Lincoln administration wrestled with the idea of authorizing the recruitment of black troops, concerned that such a move would prompt the border states to secede.

However, following the Emancipation Proclamation and faced with dwindling white volunteers, black recruitment was pursued in earnest. Volunteers from South Carolina, Tennessee, and Massachusetts filled the first authorized black regiments. Recruitment was slow until black leaders such as Frederick Douglass encouraged black men to become soldiers to ensure eventual full citizenship. (Two of Douglass’s own sons contributed to the war effort.) Volunteers began to respond, and in May 1863 the Government established the Bureau of Colored Troops to manage the burgeoning numbers of black soldiers. By the end of the Civil War, roughly 179,000 black men (10 percent of the Union Army) served as soldiers in the U.S. Army, and another 19,000 served in the Navy.

On this date in 1863 in North Carolina, the United States Department of War established the Bureau of Colored Troops, to help the Union Army fight the Civil War.

Regiments of colored troops from all states of the nation were reorganized into what became known as the United States Colored Troops (USCT).

Blacks have a rich history in United States military, and this was one of the first authorized attempts by the Federal government to enlist former slaves in the defense of the Union. The policy was innovative, new, and controversial with varying degrees of success. [Continue reading at the African American Registry.]

He was my friend, a mentor, the person who showed me a pathway to what I have since called a profession. I got my first taste of filmmaking through him, but I never got to do that which I longed to do - shoot for him.

His films are legendary and yet his name is not a household one like it should be.

He passed away on May 12th, 2013 and was buried on May 17th. I went to his funeral and afterward I had to go somewhere special to remember him in my own way.

There I found his spirit crashing against the rocks much the way he did to get his films made and seen. This is how I will remember him as well as his films.

His name was BILL MILES.

(Please take a look at his Obit in The New York Times)

The AP should stop whining because authorities uncover the details of their illegal acts.

The First Amendment does not excuse obtaining and revealing classified information. One might claim that security classification is occasionally used to cover up embarrassing events. Journalists have not been endowed with the authority to decide for themselves when classified material should be “declassified”.

I believe that freedom of the press is a most essential right. Because of its importance, it is critical that those exercising that right not themselves become criminals in the process.

The First Amendment is not a license to break the law.
”

-
-NeverLift (New York Times Comment) “Stop The Leaks”
